Biography
Dr. Xiaojing Huang has more than 22 years of combined industrial, academic, and scientific experience since receiving his PhD degree in January 1989, engaging in research and development in the areas of wireless communications and digital signal processing. He is currently a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO ICT Centre and Adjunct Professor at Macquarie University.
Before joining CSIRO in March 2009, Dr. Huang had been an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong since January 2004. In addition to his teaching and supervising roles, Dr. Huang conducted extensive research on wireless and ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. As the first Chief Investigator, Dr. Huang was awarded an Australia Research Council Discovery Project on next generation mobile communications in 2004. As the technical leader, Dr. Huang completed several industry contracted research projects such as Motorola’s “QoS for mesh networking, support for UWB standards and regulatory activities, and advanced PHY mesh mechanisms” in 2005, Agere System’s “UWB transceiver development compliant with the WiMedia standard based on OFDM” in 2006 and “Modelling of LTE Technologies” in 2007. He also actively participated in IEEE standards activities including IEEE 802.11 WLAN and IEEE 802.15 WPAN standards. He was a voting member of the IEEE 802.15 Wireless Personal Area Networks Working Group (2004–2006). Dr. Huang also contributed significantly to the University of Wollongong in promoting collaborations with international institutions. Through his efforts, the University formally established research collaborations with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsinghua University. These collaborations have significantly advanced the University’s internationalisation objectives to establish relationships with premier academic institutions in the Asia region.
While working in Motorola Australian Research Centre from June 1998 to December 2003, Dr. Huang made significant contributions in communication channel modelling, wireless digital modulation and demodulation, and spread spectrum systems for high speed and UWB communications. He developed an independent Rayleigh fading channel model which fixes several critical problems in conventional models and is now widely known and used by communication system researchers and developers as the Li-Huang model. He designed advanced algorithms for the FLEX (Motorola paging protocol) system, based on the decomposition of continuous phase modulated signal with integer modulation index, which improved the FLEX receiver sensitivity by 8 dB. This technology had been incorporated into Motorola’s second generation FLEX decoding solution chip set. Dr. Huang pioneered UWB research at Motorola Labs from early 1999 and created critical patent filings and publications on UWB spectral analysis, spectrum whitening, performance evaluation and multicarrier UWB systems, which was evidenced by the successful US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Network in Extreme Environments (NETEX) proposal to develop a high-rate low power UWB network in harsh military environments in 2003.
Dr. Huang also holds visiting positions in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is a Honorary Principal Fellow at the University of Wollongong.
