Biography
Volker joined the ICT Centre Autonomous Systems Lab in January 2009.
Currently he works on a joint project with the Tasmanian ICT Centre and AQ1 Systems where he investigates the use of optical sensing and sizing of prawns for improving acquaculture efficiency.
Prior to that he worked for the smart skies project where he worked on camera pose estimation and tracking and evaluated cameras for use in obstacle avoidance.
Before joining the ICT Centre, Volker worked for CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences (CMIS) where he develeoped image analysis algorithms with a focus on automated microscopy. Also at CMIS, Volker built an early prototype for an automated opal grading system which has meanwhile been commercialized and won an Engineering Excellence Award from Engineers Australia (Sydney Region).
Volker received his Doctoral and his Diplom degrees in Physics from the University of Heidelberg for his research on water wave imaging to investigate air-sea gas exchange processes.
Research interest include: computer vision, digital image processing, image morphology, automated microscopy, thermal infrared imaging (thermography), UAVs, multi-media photogrammetry.
