Biography
Mr Ross Ackland leads the Integrated Water Information Systems (IWIS) Theme of the Water for a Healthy Country Flagship, a national research program addressing one of Australia's most pressing natural resource issues - sustainable management of our water resources. Mr Ackland leads a team of over 50 research scientists and technical staff developing a new generation of water information infrastructure to provide timely and accurate national water accounts at greatly reduced cost, providing automated and efficient ways of routinely monitoring, analysing and reporting on Australia’s water resources. This research is done in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology through a water information research and development alliance (WIRADA).
Mr Ackland has worked for the last twenty years in research and development environments for both small and large organisations in the areas of real-time systems, communications, networking, and more recently web based spatial information systems. Ross' expertise is primarily in the management of IT based research projects with a strong software engineering background. He has key skills in building and leading research teams that can work in areas of newly emerging technologies, particularly in the areas of web based information systems. He also involved the Australian office of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that develops the standards for the Web.
