Biography
After graduating in Electrical Engineering in 1978, I worked at the University of Melbourne as technical officer, engineer and systems programmer, working on one of the earliest Unix installations in Australia.
I had the opportunity to work for a year in 1981 as a Research Associate in Computer Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), in a project developing an information retrieval system for the Lilith personal computer developed at ETH.
On my return to Australia, I had a number of part-time programming and tutoring positions while I worked on an MSc at the University of Melbourne in VLSI design tools; this included participation in the CSIRO-sponsored VLSI Multi-Project Chip program.
On completing my MSc, in 1984, I took a lecturing position in Electrical Engineering at the same University.
In 1985 I was offered the opportunity to work part-time as a systems administrator and work on my doctorate on mixed-mode electrical simulation in the Integrated Systems Laboratory at the ETH. Following completion of my doctorate in 1990, I continued working on solid modelling for VLSI design at the ETH.
In 1992 I joined the then CSIRO Division of Information Technology, where I have worked in Spatial Information Systems, a data model for interoperability in mining and exploration systems, in Intelligent Transportation Systems, on traffic simulation and vehicle location systems, in Grid Computing and eScience, primarily working on the Australia Telescope Online Archive, and on a pipeline for data reduction for users of the archive. From October 2004 to June 2007, I worked in the CSIRO ICT Centre Information Security and Privacy project, initially as a team member and as project leader from July 2005, concentrating on access control for data integration and streaming data access for sensitive health records.
From July 2007, I was a team member, then project leader in the Sensor and Sensor Networks Theme in the ICT Centre working on access control in streaming XML data. In 2009-10 I led the Sensor and Sensor Networks TCP Environmental Sensing project, and in 2010-11 he led the TCP’s Sensor Informatics project.
I will be taking leave from CSIRO from 4 July 2011 until 16 March 2012, when I intend to retire.
