Biography
1978: After graduating with 1st class honours, turned down opportunity to teach languages in School of European Studies, University of East Anglia
1979: Joined GEC telecommunications as a trainee Software Engineer working on Real-time Language Systems and Operating Systems.
1981: Appointed as Technical Group Leader, Real-time Language Technologies, GEC Telecommunications. Lead several component projects as part of the largest software engineering project in Europe at the time, 4 Multinationals (GEC Telecommunications; Plessey; STC; British Telecom) and 650 Software / Hardware Engineers.
1985: Lead collaborative, multi-organisational, multi-national development of CASE tools for telecommunications software engineering (GEC Telecommunications; GEC Software; Danish Datamatic Centre, Copenhagen)
1982 - 83: Completed Masters Degree at Programming Research Group, Oxford University, lead by Prof. Tony Hoare.
1987 - 1995: Lecturer in Programming and Software Engineering, Department of Computer Science, RMIT.
- Taught over 30 courses in 4 degree programs.
- Lead first full-fee masters program in Australia in Software Engineering, through CITRI, joint venture between RMIT and Melbourne University.
- Principal Investigator, Contract R&D with Telstra Research Laboratories (Formal specification of IEEE 802.6, Metropolitan Area Network, Network Management Protocol and Distributed Queuing Protocol).
- In CITRI's Centre for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications (CATT), supervised contract R&D with Ericsson, CASE tool development for ITU telecommunications software engineering design notation, SDL.
- Taught 50+ commercial courses in C and C++ programming and the Unix Operating System.
1995 - Present: CSIRO - Division of Information Technology; Maths and Information Sciences; ICT Centre.
1995 - 1999: Leader, Outreach Project, CSIRO Software Engineering Initiative, and Leader, Software Practices Group. Software Process Improvement initiatives in industry and across 6 or so CSIRO Divisions.
1999-2002: Advanced Distributed Software Architectures and Technologies - investigated 2-3 tier migration tools, for automatic generation of J2EE business logic from stored procedures; consulted to NOIE on e-commerce technologies.
2002 - 2003: Project Manager, Health Data Integration.
2002-2004: Project Manager, CSIRO-Boeing Integrated Defence Systems Research Program (Wedgetail)
2003- 2007: Project Manager, CSIRO-Boeing Phantom Works Research programs
