Biography

Francis Cooray received the B. Sc. degree (First Class Honours) in electronic and telecommunication engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1981, the M. Eng. degree in electrical engineering from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada in 1987, and the Ph. D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1990.

He was an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, from 1981 to 1983, a Research Assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Memorial University of Newfoundland, from 1984 to 1986, a Research Assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Manitoba, from 1986 to 1990, and a Post Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Ottawa, from 1990 to 1991. In 1992 he joined the Antennas Group at the CSIRO Telecommunications and Industrial Physics in Marsfield, NSW as an Experimental Scientist, and is currently a Senior Research Scientist in the Wireless and Networking Technologies Laboratory at the CSIRO ICT Centre in Marsfield, NSW.

He was a member of a team that developed a software package under contract to Hughes Space and Communications International Inc in USA for analysing reflectors and feed arrays used for on-board satellite antennas. He was also a member of a team that designed a VHF/UHF broadcasting antenna for News Ltd which was successfully patented.
