Biography
Anthony Nguyen is a Project Leader and Research Scientist from the Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC), CSIRO ICT Centre in Brisbane. Anthony leads the Cancer Information Processing and Reporting (CIPAR) project, which aims to build medical text analysis capabilities to unlock information in electronic health records to support cancer management decision making. He works closely with health-care practitioners from Cancer Registries and Hospital Pathology Departments in Queensland and New South Wales.
Anthony joined the AEHRC in 2006 as a Post Doctoral Fellow and later as a Research Scientist (2008) and Project Leader (2009). He works with a team of researchers and engineers with expertise in the natural language processing of medical records and clinical terminology (ontology) engineering. His research now extends beyond the cancer domain and includes the medical text analysis of radiology, discharge, and other clinical reports.
Anthony received the B.Eng. (Aerospace Avionics) degree with first class honours in 1999 and a Ph.D. degree in the area of satellite and aerial image processing in 2005 at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). As part of his Ph.D., he was involved in various applied research contracts for clients such as DSTO, U.S. Office of Naval Research, and Boeing Australia.
Prior to joining CSIRO, Anthony spent a year as a Post Doctoral Fellow with the Faculty of Information Technology at QUT, working on a funded research project on the predictive analysis of the microclimatic impacts on the built environment for the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Construction Innovation.
Anthony’s technical research interests is in the area of informatics, in particular multimedia processing and mining, information retrieval, ontology use, pattern recognition and machine learning. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, as well as travelling, catching a good movie and relaxing.
