CSIRO Wedgetail Projects Successfully Completed

Photo: Wedgetail aircraft on its first flight over the RockiesThe 3–year “Wedgetail’ research program conducted by Mathematical and information Science and the ICT Centre for the Boeing Company was successfully concluded in Sydney recently. Dean Webb, Boeing Project Manager, and Bob Lobbia, a Boeing Technical Fellow in data fusion, conducted the review. Bob had a leading role in the Wedgetail development program in the US.

The CSIRO program has conducted research into new technologies to enhance operator performance onboard the Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control platform, which is under acquisition by the Commonwealth of Australia.

Two proposals submitted by a joint team from groups in Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide, won all available funding in a competitive industry-wide bid in 2002.

The team has developed new techniques for automated understanding of combat and surveillance situations, for intelligent ways of providing information to operators, and for providing feedback to the operators by interpreting their speech and their actions.

CSIRO and Boeing are now jointly investigating ways to further develop the technology.
