Trends in Health Data Integration
Dr
David Hansen, CSIRO ICT Centre
Making full and effective use of health related data
sources is seen as a key way for Australia to improve the safety,
quality and efficiency of its health system. Currently national
health systems in almost all developed countries are investing, to
various degrees, in using more information and communication
technology within their health systems.
One example is electronic patient records, which are
seen as a key way of improving patient care and reducing cost
through the recording of patient data, although there are questions
of privacy and security when this data is used for health research.
Data linkage units are seen as an alternative way of bringing
existing data sources together to provide data for health research
while maintaining patient confidentiality and data security.
In this paper details of these current projects will
be reviewed and the Health Data IntegrationT solution will be
presented. HDIT allows distributed heterogeneous data sets to be
interrogated and patient data linked while maintaining patient
confidentiality and data security.
