Robotics: Achievements and Challenges

Peter Corke, CSIRO ICT Centre

The term robot was introduced in 1920 and robotic technology is now 50 years old. Much has been achieved, but we are still a very long way from the machines depicted in movies such as "Star Wars" or "I Robot". Robots have had the greatest uptake in factory environments and now perform a significant amount of the labour involved in automobile manufacture. The frontiers for robotics are now in areas such as driving outdoors (on the Earth or on Mars), flying and operating underwater. New applications areas are being developed such as personal assistance, medical rehabilitation, surgery, mining, forestry, agriculture, cargo handlling and many more. The robots are coming!
