Technical Challenges in the Financial Transaction Business

John C Smerek, Keycorp

The Financial transaction market today is undergoing fundamental changes not only in Australia but worldwide. The general market trend is to provide more value added services, cheaper devices and ubiquitous connectivity for EFTPOS terminals. Terminal connectivity is moving towards public Internet, more front-end and back-end services are being seen as revenue generators as too is terminal management. These trends in the financial transaction business are evolving from several key technology driving forces; wide spread deployment of broadband networks, worldwide financial standards, increased security, new transaction input devices and the use of commodity devices to name but a few of these trends.

This talk will focus on some of some of those challenges and market opportunities imposed by those trends. Current and future directions will also be discussed.
