Personal information: a user's guide to its care
and management
Dr John Zic,
CSIRO ICT Centre
Information management systems are usually employed by
enterprises for the reliable, secure management and access of both
the enterprises' and customers' information.
It is often regarded by IT professionals that the enterprise
running the information management system is the custodian of
customers' information.
Unfortunately, this expectation sometimes runs contrary to users'
expectations. Users' in some cases see themselves as the custodians
of their personal information, and are very wary of entrusting or
releasing information to others. Further, users often present and
access different information in different contexts, and often
associate this information with separate identities.
This talk examines, from the user perspective, some of the key
points that future information management systems will need to
address in order to address the user's requirements of management
and control of their personal information in a highly connected
world.
