Quantum information technology - prospects for the
future

We will attempt to give a broad overview of the burgenoning new
research field of quantum information processing, that is using
fundamentally quantum systems to perform information processing.
Both the US and Europe now have well defined road-maps for the
progression of the field similar to roadmaps built by the
semiconductor industry. We will outline spin-off and quantum-focused
innovations which have led to the start up of various small
companies (primarily in the quantum communications area), and will
postulate the next near-term innovation areas of research in quantum
information science.
