DIRECTIONS IN WIRELESS IC's

Neil Weste, Macquarie University

In most technological areas, new fields are found by probing the bounds of current technology. In the field of wireless communications, this can be construed as much faster communication rates while maintaining power and range budgets or much slower communication rates while drastically reducing power and/or increasing range. Usually, out of these examinations pop new application areas. This talk will examine two development activities currently being undertaken in Australia in these polar areas.

Firstly an overview of the asset tracking tags being designed by g2 microsystems will be given. These extremely complex "RF systems on chip" are being designed by the world-class ex-Radiata team. Secondly, research efforts underway at Macquarie University , the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia in conjunction with NHEW R&D, in the area of wireless gigabit rates at 60+GHz will be highlighted. Both efforts are aimed at continuing to create lasting value from Australia 's recent RFIC success in the 802.11 arena.
