Implementation of a Large-scale General Ontology at Cycorp

Dr. Cathy Legg
Ontologist

Tuesday 17th December at 11am

Abstract

This talk presents some of the 'nuts and bolts' of the unique system architecture developed in-house at Cycorp in order to manage and develop the Cyc ontology. Topics covered will include the "CycL language", the way in which separate ontologists' work is cordoned off during development, and then combined, the ways in which the inference engine has been customised in order not to 'explode' over such a large domain, and the natural language interface which, it is hoped, will allow much greater interaction with (and development of) Cyc by non-philosophers.

If time permits, the talk will finish with a demo of the project the speaker is currently working on - "CycSecure" - which involves a computer security domain ontology and a customised (SHOP) planner engine which reasons over it to generate attack plans for a scanned network.

If you want to experiment with OpenCyc, there is a version available online, or you can check out the OpenCyc website.
