Abstract

Among the essential functionalities supported by distributed multimedia systems, quality of service (QoS) is of prime interest and requires the involvement of the different system components such as database systems, file servers or client machines. This function aims to control and guarantee the quality level the system is able to offer to the user. While integrating such a function in a distributed multimedia system, it is necessary to consider the user's requirements regarding the quality of service provided by the system. Such requirements may concern system performance, the quality of the information, as well as the costs of the service provision. Implementing this function leads to design methods for managing the needed resources and for delegating some tasks to specific system components such as file servers or database systems.

In this talk we investigate interactions between database systems and QoS managers in distributed multimedia systems. We first introduce QoS management as an essential end-to-end functionality that the entire system should provide. We then propose an approach to integrate user-defined requirements, together with the dynamic properties of the system components involved, into a distributed query processing environment. Furthermore, we point out some current work on integration, federation and inter-operation of QoS information for database systems.
