Abstract

Multimedia applications such as digital libraries, video-on-demand systems and interactive video applications introduce new challenges in managing large collections of multimedia data that include digital audio and videos, images, and text. In order to support such applications, we need appropriate conceptual models that can model both high level semantics and low level content-based structure of the multimedia objects represented. In addition, as we are dealing with a continuous medium, we need special ways to manipulate the spatio-temporal medium. This talk will look at the general problems of multimedia modeling, the complex objects as well as relationships within and across audio-visual content. In this context we will also look at the emerging ISO MPEG-7 Standard which provides some standard ways to describe audio-visual content. We will illustrate how the concepts represented in a multimedia model can be described as MPEG-7 multimedia description schemes.
