Sounds, Space, Touch and Memory: Outcomes of a CMIS artist residencyIain Mott Tuesday 18 July at 11am AbstractThe joint Australia Council New Media Arts Fund / CSIRO "Arts in Industry Placement" affords artists and scientist the chance to exchange ideas and synthesise new forms. Now at the end of my residency at CMIS I will use this talk describe work with scope beyond my initial expectations. The work to be discussed includes: spatial audio and sound synthesis in haptic environments; binaural video art; and interactive sound art using audio analysis and data searching techniques. Short resumeIain Mott's prime artistic activity is designing, developing, building and composing music for public interactive sound installations. His work explores the physical relationship between music and the public and integrates kinetic sculpture, audio electronics and video. Interactivity is used as a device to heighten the aesthetic experience, engaging and directing participants in an activity of sensory exploration. Iain has presented The Talking Chair and Squeezebox sculptures at numerous exhibitions in Australia and at the 1996 International Computer Music Conference in Hong Kong. His most recent installation Sound Mapping was presented at the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery in January 1998. The project has been awarded an Honorary Mention in the 1998 Prix Ars Electronica and was exhibited at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria in September 1998. Iain has composed music for ABC Television, TCN Nine, SBS Television, Grey Advertising, Film Victoria, and Film Australia productions. He is enrolled in a PhD at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, University of Tasmania, where he has taught classes on electronic music, sound installation and new media. Iain’s present position is artist-in-residence at the CSIRO Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences.
