Abstract

Haptic devices are a novel 3D user interface tool that can apply a physical force to the hand of the person using them. When they are used in a 3D user-interface application they can simulate objects and physical behaviour, and a wide range of applications for them is emerging.

This talk will explain what haptic devices do, and how they can be integrated with visual and other displayed information to produce a rich user interface.  Some early examples of industrial applications will be presented, and we will finish by speculating on the future of these devices.

Short resume

Duncan Stevenson is the leader of the "Interactive Modelling & Visualisation Systems" research group within the CSIRO Division of Mathematical & Information Sciences, and is based in Canberra. His Group's interests include exploring novel 3D user interface technology (often sourced from the realm of Virtual Reality) and applying it to industrial problems.  His group work with industrial partners in diverse fields, including mining, gas&oil, medical and cultural.
