Abstract
The ever-growing ammounts of data we have to deal with in virtually
all fields of science and its practical application have let to the idea
of multiresolution representations - that is, representations allowing
for data to be accessed at various levels of detail.
Graphical objects like curves and surfaces are the building blocks in
a large number of applictions related to visualiation and virtual
environments. We present a class of representations for such objects,
based on linear subdivision, that leads to hierarchical multiresolution
representations. The resulting schemes are flexible (adjustable basis
functions) and efficient (linear-time algorithms).
