Abstract

Software Engineers face several barriers to attaining a high degree of
usability in their products. If software engineering and human-computer
interaction are to be smoothly integrated, it essential that we have the
ability to design for usability upfront, rather than performing
after-the-event evaluations. This talk will discuss why design patterns can help developers to construct more usable software. There are several kinds of patterns which could be helpful in this regard (e.g. patterns of users, patterns of user-interface elements). Thus, the likely conceptions of usability-oriented design patterns will be outlined, along with a discussion as to how each might be applied in development.
