Abstract

This seminar will explore the concept of "shared memory" in engineering design. We start with a distinction between vertical memory (codified corpus of knowledge, techniques, and models in the relevant scientific disciplines) and horizontal memory ( a record of the multi- and inter-disciplinary interactions and communications generated largely during the process of design). The latter dimension is predicated on attempting to understand design as a social process involving continuous negotiations over terminology, concepts, methods, and techniques among the designers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Details of the ndim project and its offshoot LIRE (living repository) system developed in collaboration with two large European design organizations at the Institute ofr Complex Engineered Systems (ICES), Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh to provide computer support for shared horizontal memory will be presented.
